Bay of plenty is well known for its beauty! This means if you do not have a lot of money to spend on activities, there are loads of free and cheap things to do in the area. We have made a top 10 list for you to make it easy! Please ask reception for the full list of free and cheap things to do in Mount Maunganui.

#1 Visit Mount Maunganui beach! Voted best beach in New Zealand! Chill at the beach,

#2 Walk around Mount Maunganui base. The 5km base track around the Mount which is quite flat and has stunning views over the little mermaid pools, beach and ocean! Or hike up the Mount Maunganui (Mauao), this will take up about 45 minutes, depending on the amount of photo's you take along the way!

#3 Have a picnic at one of the many FREE BBQ spots along the beach! 

#4 If you go for a walk into town, keep your eyes open for the street prints on the Mauao art trail. This trail shows 16 beautiful murals in downtown Mount Maunganui based on the theme 'land and sea'. 

#5 Explore leisure island. A popular walking track will lead you to the northern tip of the island where you’ll find a blowhole which spectacularly shoots water skyward during high tides and large ocean swells, this is a great jumping spot, get a local to show you where to jump!

#6 Visit the Little Big Market every Saturday on different locations. Check out their face book page for dates and locations.

#7 Check out one of many waterfalls in the area. A great place in winter as more water creates better looking waterfalls and in summer a great place to cool down. McLaren Falls Park is one of our favourite local gems. McLaren Falls is a popular spot for bush walks, picnics, fishing and kayaking. Enjoy a short, easy stroll to the picturesque waterfall and spot the glow worms on either side of the track after dark. Grab a hot chocolate at the Falls Cafe to sweeten the adventure!

#8 Go to Astrolabe on cheap-ass Tuesday, $10 for a beer, burger and fries! This is an iconic pub decorated with all the classic old school kiwi memorabilia.

#9 Try some fish and chips form Mount Fish & Chips shop and watch the sunset on the beach. You will be amazed by the change in colour of the sky.
