A quick browse of our photo albums and galleries has probably revealed the fact that one of the fun, quirky and very colourful features of our backpacker accommodation is the beautiful, New Zealand-themed murals everywhere. Let's introduce you to the artist behind this fabulous creativity!
One of the features visitors to our Mount Maunganui hostel often comment on is the beautiful, brightly coloured murals throughout our accommodation. From hand-painted surfboards to walls featuring Tuis as well as beach themes, bush themes and more.
The very talented artist behind all this gorgeous work is the equally fabulous, Erika Pearce. As an artist who is also a dedicated ocean conservationist, Erika is deeply motivated to inspire communities to care for and protect their coastlines and surrounding waters. A drive that is also close to our hearts and the reason we encourage all our guests to participate in our local beach clean-up and dune planting days!
Erika's large ocean murals have a very positive impact by opening up conversations with people of all ages. Erika has painted murals all over New Zealand and we are stoked to also feature her work here in Mount Maunganui!
Our most visible mural is on the outside of our hostel building which features glittering waves, a classic Kombi campervan, and fluorescent hibiscus flowers. It is now one of the most well-known and well-loved landmarks in this community.
Inside a selection of walls throughout our hostel also feature Erika's work including a wave mural in our games room and a beautiful beach scene upstairs in our TV Lounge. We also have a few surfboards throughout the hostel painted with surfer girls and turquoise waves - giving a beachy feel and some Mount Maunganui vibes.
Don’t forget to also check out the giant Tui mural located in our outdoor patio area — it makes the perfect photo backdrop as you take photos with all your new friends you’ll make while you're here!
