Our Top Picks of Cheap or Free Things to Do

The Bay of Plenty region is well known for being beautiful and plentiful! One of the things we love about this region is the huge amount of things you can do that cost nothing or very little. Here's our top picks to help get you started...

#1 Visit Mount Maunganui beach. Voted best beach in New Zealand!

#2 Walk around Mauao (the Mount for which Mount Maunganui is named). The 5km base track has stunning views out to rock pools, our beaches, Tauranga harbour and the ocean. Walking up Mauao will take up about 30-45 minutes depending on the amount of photo's you take along the way.

#3 Have a picnic at one of the many FREE BBQs along our waterfronts and in many of our parks and reserves.

#4 Follow the Mauao street art trail. This trail includes 16 beautiful murals in and around downtown Mount Maunganui based on the theme 'Land and Sea'.

#5 Explore Leisure Island. This popular walking track will lead you to the northern tip of the island where you’ll find a blowhole which spectacularly shoots water skyward during high tides and large ocean swells.

#6 Browse the Little Big Markets every 2nd Saturday - the perfect place to check out our fabulous local artisans, food producers and food trucks.

#7 Check out one of many waterfalls in the area. A great place in winter as more water creates better looking waterfalls and in summer a great place to cool down. McLaren Falls Park is one of our favourite local gems and is a popular spot for bush walks, picnics, fishing and kayaking. Enjoy a short, easy stroll to the picturesque waterfall and spot the glow worms on either side of the track after dark. Grab a hot chocolate at the Falls Cafe to sweeten the adventure!

#8 Grab a free surfboard from our stash and get out there and give it a go!

#9 Visit Tauranga Art Gallery - you can check out their Facebook page to see what exhibitions are showing while you're here.

#10 Check out out Historic Village over at 17th Ave, Tauranga.
